Originally founded in 1993, De La Espada were early champions of authoritative contemporary design, particularly in the United Kingdom. Designers in their own right, the founders conceived the company as a multi-disciplinary amalgam: a manufacturer, designer and brand studio that draws on traditional craft and artisanship.
Based on a passion for wood and its purity, early collections were inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement and minimalist architects such as Tadao Ando and John Pawson. Once established as a highly respected manufacturer, the company began collaborating with select designers on product development, curation and art direction. The company also maintained their well-respected eponymous line.
Today, De La Espada, with a dedicated factory in Portugal, works with some of the most exciting design brands on the globe. After the 100% Design exhibition in London, they formed a partnership with Turkish multidisciplinary design studio Autoban, creating a comprehensive range of seating, lighting and bedding. The company also works with notable names including Luca Nichetto, Matthew Hilton, Studioilse, Autoban and Neri&Hu. The De La Espada design is drawn to designers who art direct, curate and design their own product lines, and support them through manufacture and distribution.
Regardless of their collaborators or where in the world they happen to be, De La Espada furniture is distinguished by its elegant material palette, meticulous joinery and artisanal woodwork, much of which is perfected in the company’s factory in Northern Portugal. The world of De La Espada design includes lighting, dining, living, storage, working, and design accessories.
